And now for the dirty sexy dish from Clyde Phillips about season three. We talked to him before the writers' room even opened for the new season, so everything is subject to change, but here's what Dex's boss is thinking about for the series' next installment.

Who's Your Daddy? Clyde says that in season three, Dexter gets personal and, uh, professional traction in a way we've not yet seen: "Basically, what's happened with Dexter is that the first year was his childhood, and the second year was his adolescence, and the third year is going to be his adulthood. He will become more of his own man. He will still live by what we call the Code of Harry, if you know what that is, although his relationship with his father was already to some extent deconstructed in the second year." Ah, he's metaphorically killed the father..."But then, once you kill the father, then you learn to appreciate him." If this involves more James Remar (Harry Morgan) and MCH in a silly wig, whatever this means it's A-okay by me.

Clean Slate: Clyde says they're still noodling around with the exact arc of season three: "The first year we had the books, and the second year we knew that the bodies were going to turn up and that the FBI was going to come and that Doakes was going to be suspicious. The third year we're starting tabula rasa." This, in case you couldn't guess from the show in question being Dexter, means anything is possible...
Dexter

Darkly Dreaming Dexter: Dexter Morgan continues to embrace the Clark Kent/Bruce Wayne side of his life in season three. In particular, one of TV's best good and evil entanglements, Dexter and Rita, will be going strong. Clyde tells me, "The relationship will be there...One of the things that keeps him grounded is his burgeoning affection for Rita and his outright affection for her children. If Dexter didn't have Rita, if he didn't have the Code, if he didn't have his sister, there's a very good chance he'd go off the rails. He does have them all, and that's what levels him, that's what keeps him grounded."

Darling Deadly Doakes: Now that Sgt. James Doakes (played by Erik King) has been, well, dispatched from the series, is that the end of his presence in Miami? Clyde says, "First of all, it was a very difficult decision personally to do what we did to Doakes, because we love the guy—we love Erik King. Nobody could have handled it more professionally than he did. He was splendid when we had to break the news to him. It's what you do on a show...We're all professional, and he understood. Basically, next season, Doakes' end resonates emotionally with Laguerta (Lauren VĂ©lez), although I don't know where that goes yet." May I propose an appearance by Ghost Doakes?

Be sure to check back Monday for more Dexter goodness in my Watch with Kristin Show.

Until then, what do you think should go down in season three? A new direction for Deb's (Jennifer Carpenter) love life? A better babe for David Zayas' Bautista? More shirtless Michael C. Hall? All of the above?

Your thoughts are welcome in Comments!

wow thanks for that, i hope there is more news on the new season now that they began writing...grownup dexter!
wonder if that will involve a child with Rita..cause marriage..would make his night trips harder!

no child for dexter... i don't see him as an actual blood-father...

but definitely more shirt-less Michael C. Hall!!!

interesting idea with him having a child.. but i dont think that wud work very well in the show.. i was thinkin more along the lines of him stumbling across a really messed up kid and handing down the Code of Harry.. kind of like a lineage of serial killers.. haha that might b cool to see.. im also thinking by now he must have pissed off some major crime families whod wanna see him dead.. if they suspected Doakes wasnt really the Bay Harbour Butcher they might have a few "deathsquads: or maybe hitmen.. hell those columbians cant have been happy bout all that coke bein blown away

Rosanne, I guess that would keep up the tension between Dexter and Rita. If he's going to keep being the Dark Defender, then he's going to have to disappear once in a while. Another silly idea would be for him to get in an accident which would keep him from doing his work. Maybe he's need an apprentice.

Not to change the subject, but I wondered why the other characters never commented on or seemed to notice Dexter's Barbie-headed key chain....

runlikeagirl said...

I wondered the same thing about the barbie key-chain. I also wonder if LaGuerta will take on Doakes' suspicion now that he's dead. She refuses to believe he's the butcher and he was pretty vocal with her about his distrust of Dexter. I'm up for any storyline as long as it keeps him with Rita and involves him taking his shirt off!

I think that Debs might come to know about Dexter's dark secret.

And the kids, Cody and Aster might have their own dark side which Dexter would be too happy to guide.
( according to the second book)

or none of the above!

I bet you Dexter is going to lose someone or something big in season 3. Be it Rita, Deb, Batista, what have you. I think Rita will meet her end, personally. Just a thought though and by no means an idea.

Definitely lundy will show up again in season 3. They totally set it up that he had nagging suspicions something was just wrong with Doakes being the man. I'm betting we'll see him again, digging around....

DeadlyJynx said...

I for one, hope that Lundy does show up in the third season. Dexter could take on an apprentice now, but, i think that would be more of a season four, with the ending on season three , being of Dexter taking on an apprentice. I think i would try and work in a marriage. And dammit give Bautista a woman. Definitely do something for Masuka. He needs a lady, or at least scare him enough to wet his pants.. (It would be funny).

Dexter memory flashbacks are always good, but how about some Deb flashbacks in season 3? Was she really completely unconscieous the whole time that Dexter and Brian were talking over her at the end of season 1? In that drugged state, it might take a few minutes of waking up before she would be able to open her eyes. It might take a while for those impressions to come back to her. Season 3 might be a good place. I'd love for Deb to have just enough suspicion about Dexter's activities that she is driven to find out more about Dexter's pre-Morgan days, or at least about what Dexter and Dad were doing all those times that she was not allowed to go with them. Although she might struggle with it, I'd like to see her protect and support Dexter, despite her suspicions.

Here's another thought...
What about the Captain? Maybe he's in this a little deeper than meets the eye? Maybe he just TOLD Dexter that Harry committed suicide because he, himself, is the one who actually overdosed Harry. Why? Don't know, but there's some interesting plot possibilities there.

I did not like Deb very much at first but I am not very attracted to super skinny girls thier in Florida where is the curves? LOL The Lundy and Deb love intrest things was kinda gross I mean, I know she has daddy issues but come on..yechhh I do not want him coming back...However thier could be a new up and coming Journalist that was following the bay harbour story and noticed somthing no one else did comes to Florida and maybe is a little to clever for his own good. Defeintly another Dark Avenger showing up could never be bad another person pushing into Dexters teritory...who isn't evil like his brother but maybe a little rash and too flashy wich could threaten to get himself caught and Dexter as well. Or maybe her gets to attachted to Dexter and Jealous and goes after his girl and the kids. I definetly would not mind seeing another dueling serial killer plot line. Maybe he has to go to Cuba and do a prison break type thing after he gets stranded there with not wallet or money and can not depend on the cops or his sister to help. Seeing Dexter get toyed with but comes out on top will allways makes for a greast season.

I only have one real suggestion that I feel would be conducive to a long lasting show. Please...do not allow a supernatural angle. I think "ghost" Doakes appearing as part of Dexter's warped mental state would be fine, like, say, his conscience taking on Doakes likeness and attitude, as was done with Brian in the begining of season 2. But please no spirit child of the god Molach being inspiration for the Dark Passenger, or anything even remotely like that for the love of god. Just about all the critics didn't like the supernatural angle in the third Dexter book. If anything, I'd advise that maybe it's a split personality trying to surface.

I too was thinking that Rita would get pregnant this season. I would love to see that. It would definitely make it harder for Dexter, but a late night trip for formula or pampers could lead to a date with death for another victim. It would definitely be a quickie though. Dexter would have to learn to adapt.

JamesJellings said...

I think it will involve dexter accidentally getting engaged to rita, and regretting it but thinking it's a good thing in the end because rita's young son is acting strange/killing animals like young dexter, and dexter will train him like harry did to dexter..

because i heard that's like part of the plot in one of the books.

I don't foresee any new kids for Dex, he's already a family man. I love Rita, but Dex has accepted sexuality (if you recall, he was afraid of getting close to Rita, but by the end of last season, he was initiating it) and this could become a new addiction. Though unlikely, he might get involved with some new ladies, bringing the relationship with Rita to an end. I wonder who will replace Doakes, they'll need a very strong character.

I'm a little bummed that Lila is out of the picture. She kept things pretty intersting. Can't understand why Dexter is so drawn to Rita in the first place. She's always been an overly needy, whiny, presence in his life that doesn't represent a wholesome relationship at all. ( Not that Dexter is truly looking for that.) I would like to know where Deborah was during all of Harry's "schooling" with Dexter. Where does she fit in to the whole scheme of things? Who was Dexter's actual father. What happened to him? I wouldn't mind another copy-cat killer surfacing. Would really hate Dexter to suddenly " see the light" and settle down to some boring existence with Rita. Let's keep it interesting people.

I have to disagree on that one. I won't miss Lila at all. I agreed with Deb about her from the beginning -- skank. I really like dynamic between Dex and Rita and I thought the scene in Shrink Wrap between them was pretty steamy. I'm looking forward to see where their relationship goes. As she's gotten healthier, her expectations of Dex are changing so she wants to know where he's been. It will be intersting to see how they move foward. Will they move in together? If not, where will it go? The trailer/promos and interviews with MCH that I've seen indicate that his work is operating this season with "all engines on." I can't wait to see what that means.

In the book, Rita son does kill animals and Astrid is involved as well. In the show it seems cody is fine, but Astrid is a little messed up. She hardly smiles and is very good at reading people. I think she's a messed up kid and it wouldn't might be interesting to explore that.

I think that Miguel Prado is going to be more trouble for Dexter than help, and I'm interested to see how that pans out

Anonymous said...

well,now miguel is dead.

i absolutely positively HATE being on pins and needles between episodes. id sure like to know whats in store for the next episode. it really chaps my hide!

I hated the books. Thank goodness they did not do the character exactly like the book. His character would not be so likeable if he was as cold as the book.

I just want him to keep killing the bad guys that the law can not stop. And not recruit anybody, like Harry did him unless the person was on it way to becoming a stone killer.

Harry did try to deter Dexter, but he realized it was too late.
